🌸 Spring (March–May): Our Top Pick
Spring is the best overall time to visit China. Temperatures are comfortable across most of the country, flowers are blooming, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived.
- March: Can be cool in the north (Beijing still gets cold snaps in early March). Southern cities like Guilin and Chengdu are lovely. Cherry blossoms begin mid-month in Shanghai and Wuhan.
- April: Our single favourite month. Beijing warms up beautifully, the Great Wall is at its green best, and Shanghai's spring flowers are in full bloom. Mild and mostly dry across the country.
- May: Still excellent, but tourist numbers build towards the summer. Book hotels in advance for popular sites. The Labour Day holiday (1–5 May) is very busy — avoid travelling on those specific days if possible.
Cherry blossom season in China is spectacular — often rivalling Japan. The best spots include Wuhan's East Lake (late March), Beijing's Yuyuantan Park and Fragrant Hills (early April), and Shanghai's Gucun Park (mid-March). Arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds.
☀️ Summer (June–August): Hot, Rainy, and Crowded
Summer is the most challenging time to visit China for first-time visitors. It brings three things in combination: intense heat, high humidity, and school holiday crowds.
- Beijing can reach 38°C (100°F) in July with high humidity
- Southern China (Guangzhou, Chengdu) experiences heavy monsoon rains from June–August
- Tourist sites are at their busiest — queues at the Great Wall and Forbidden City can be 2+ hours
- Hotel prices are at their annual peak
If summer is your only option, consider visiting higher altitude destinations like Zhangjiajie, Guilin, or Yunnan Province, which are cooler and more manageable even in July and August.
🍂 Autumn (September–November): A Close Second
Autumn is the second-best time to visit, and many experienced China travellers actually prefer it to spring. Temperatures are mild, the summer humidity drops sharply, and landscapes glow with golden foliage.
- September: Excellent across China. Summer heat breaks quickly and the light is beautiful. One of the least-crowded months of the year.
- October: Brilliant weather — but avoid the first week (National Day Golden Week, 1–7 October) when hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel domestically. Prices spike and sites are packed. After the 8th, it's excellent.
- November: Autumn foliage peaks in mid-November. Beijing's Fragrant Hills are famous for their red maple leaves. Increasingly cool in the north — pack layers.
❄️ Winter (December–February): Cold but Rewarding
Winter is underrated. Yes, northern China gets genuinely cold (Beijing sees -5°C to -10°C in January), but it also brings the fewest crowds and lowest prices of the year. The Forbidden City in snow is one of China's most magical sights.
Southern China (Guangzhou, Hainan, Yunnan) stays warm through winter and is actually at its most pleasant in December and January. If you want sun, these are perfect winter escapes.
January in Harbin (northeast China) hosts the world's largest ice and snow sculpture festival. Huge illuminated ice palaces, carved entirely from the frozen Songhua River, are truly unforgettable. Average temperature: -20°C — so pack extremely warm clothing!
🚫 Busy Holidays to Plan Around
These dates see massive domestic travel surges. Hotels book out months in advance, tourist sites become extremely crowded, and prices jump:
Chinese New Year (approx. late Jan–mid Feb, varies yearly) — The biggest travel event in human history. Up to 3 billion journeys made in 40 days. Unless you have a specific reason to experience it, first-time visitors are better off avoiding this period entirely.
Golden Week — National Day (1–7 October every year) — Tourist sites hit capacity limits. The Great Wall, West Lake in Hangzhou, and Zhangjiajie become almost impassable. Avoid the first week of October.
Labour Day Holiday (1–5 May every year) — Smaller than Golden Week but still very busy at popular spots. Book hotels and trains well in advance if your trip overlaps with this period.
